About Me

I am a multidisciplinary designer and creative director who has a passion for branding and working out complex design challenges. Over a long career, I have developed strong aesthetic sensibilities and UX knowledge that have yielded memorable creative solutions among a variety of media. I have an MFA in design and have done design work for a variety of clients. Some of my longest engagements have been The Library of Congress, AOL, NASDAQ and the National Gallery of Art.

My career has given me the opportunity to design for all the platforms that exist within the umbrellas of print and digital. On the print side, I have created trade journals, large environmental signage, book covers, brochures etc. On the digital side, I have designed enterprise level websites, social media, infographics, email campaigns, web marketing, and motion graphics. It is important to me to stay current on the latest trends. I see a lot of opportunity in embracing AI.

I have experience leading teams with a variety of skillsets and points of view. I feel that if teammates feel valued, they are happier in their role and also more inclined to put in the extra effort to make a project successful. Mentorship is something that particularly resonates with me. My experience teaching design on the college level helped me develop an approach I would describe as nurturing but rigorous.

If there was one component of the design space I have strong convictions about it is usability. I am often struck by issues with interfaces ranging from fast casual dining signage to Fortune 500 websites to consumer products. I think user-testing is invaluable in product development and is too often skipped in haste. I believe in challenging assumptions.

This website features a survey of some of my favorite projects. My resume (PDF) is also available for download.

Outside of the design world, my favorite thing to do is spend time with my kids who are five and seven. We stimulate intellectual curiosity in each other try to pay attention to the wonderous world around us. At the moment our schedules are full with chess meetups, piano lessons and swim class. My hope is to one day nurture in them a love of many of the things I enjoy, such as woodworking. It's a hobby I find very fulfilling and perhaps one day they will too.

Thanks for visiting my website. All the best,

Dan
